[ARCHIVED] Polar Bear Plunge

The Polar Bear Plunge is one of the most popular events of the Southampton holiday season. Hundreds of plungers jump into the chilly water of the Atlantic Ocean to support local people in need. Each year on the second Saturday morning of December, plungers gather at Cooper’s Beach in Southampton Village, many wearing festive costumes or joining teams to show their support.  The enthusiasm and excitement build as plungers await the boom of the canon signaling the start time. Then, in a wave of cheers from friends and family, they run for the water.  Members of the local fire, ambulance, and ocean water rescue departments and surfers are on hand to make sure all are safe.  Participants and fans enjoy hot drinks and food in the Cooper’s Beach Pavilion after the plunge. And all plungers get a special Polar Bear Plunge hat.

Since the first Polar Bear Plunge in 2004, the event has raised the money to support Heart of the Hamptons programs that help people in need in Southampton.  All you have to do to join the fun is sign up and collect pledges of support (sponsors) from your family, friends and co-workers.
